2013 Sponsor: Motorex

I have been lucky enough to be sponsored by Motorex for about six years now, and have never thought about leaving the brand.  Motorex products are of the highest quality and make my life easier as a racer.  The Motorex filter cleaner may be my favorite product as it makes filter cleaning a breeze.  Thankfully, Motorex has stepped up even more for 2013 and I can't thank them enough.  For more info go to http://www.motorexusa.com/.

2012 in Review

First race of 2012- Tri-County HS
It's hard to believe that 2012 has come to an end.  2012 was very good to me as I put in all of the hard work and came out with my ultimate achievement of an A-200 Championship.  I plan to take what I learned in 2012 and apply it to 2013 so that I can reach my goal of qualifying for AA.  After a lot of thinking and trying to get some bike support for 2013, I have decided to stick with my 09 200 XC.  Although the 200 has its negatives as it can be a little slow in the open terrain, it excels in the tight, rocky conditions and is a very light bike.  When comparing to the 250, it turns so much better and provides a lot of stability on the front end.  I am going to change some gearing and engine characteristics for 2013 so I can utilize the strength of the motor.  I have a year's worth of recorded suspension settings which were developed with the help of Drew Smith at Works Enduro Rider.  I am confident that I can come into the season with confidence and start it off right.  I have never come into the season completely confident, and I want to change that for 2013.  The first race of the year will be in Georgia at the first NEPG enduro.  I would like to currently welcome some new sponsors for 2013 which are Stickman Graphx, G2 Ergonomics, and Pit Posse.  I will announce the rest later but most sponsors from 2012 will be returning for 2013.  Bye 2012 and hello to 2013.  Thank you to all those that made 2012 an enjoyable year!

2013 Sponsor: Works Enduro Rider

I am happy to announce a continued partnership with Drew Smith and Mike at Works Enduro Rider for 2013.  Two years ago, Drew Smith approached me about doing some media type things for him and we have hit it off ever since.  He has brought my confidence on the bike to another level and has always been there to assist me with advice.  Suspension is such a tricky thing to get right and Drew does an amazing job at getting his riders comfortable.  I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to test at his house this summer, and it is remarkable at the things Drew notices about bike set-up and suspension.  Thanks WER for the continued support!

2012 ECEA A-200 Enduro Champion

A Season in Review: ECEA A-200 Enduro Champion
Rider: Zack Huberty
Class Finish: 1st A-200

The 2012 season has been one of the biggest learning experiences.  I started the year off with a lack luster finish at the opening round of the enduro series.  After getting beat, I was determined to turn the season around in order to go for the A-200 Championship.  Early on in the season, my confidence for being able to win was pretty low but things started to turn around when I raced the DER Enduro.  At the DER enduro, I finished one minute behind my biggest competitor in my class who I’ve struggled to challenge for the past year.  Then, at the RORR enduro, I was able to take my first A-200 win on a Vee Rubber Trials Tire at a muddy, technical event.  This started to build my confidence as I knew that I could win.  After buying a Specialized Hardrock mountain bike from Lee Rogers at Bicycle Therapy, another fire was lit within as Lee stressed the importance of fueling your body correctly.  With the help of my dad, I got set-up with a nutritionist at CCH, and I also started using Hammer Nutrition products with the help of Lee Rogers.  I started to dedicate my time to eating right, fueling my body correctly on race day, and fine-tuning bike set-up.  Before I knew it, I had five straight wins in the A200 class and started reeling in the possibility of the A200 championship.
By the end of the season, I was able to win (7) races along with having (8) top 20 finishes with a 9th overall finish at the GMER Enduro.  Going into the season, I had never won a race in the A-200 class so this year I have made big steps towards the possibility of AA.  Although my last two races of the season don’t show the same fire as in the summer, the speed is still there.  The last two races were unfortunate as I had two bike problems but you have to learn from your mistakes in order to build for next year.  Now that the season is over, I am happy to announce that I am the 2012 ECEA A-200 Enduro Champion.  It has been a long time coming and has required dedication in order to juggle college and school.
This year went fairly well, but I am already looking forward to seeing what I can do in 2013.  I will continue to follow the program I started in the summer along with some other additions in order to hopefully qualify for AA next year.  It is also my goal to win another championship.  As with every champion, there are a lot of people behind them.  I’d first like to thank my dad for all of his help this year as he pitted for me at most of the enduros (which isn’t the most exciting thing, but minimizes my stress on race day).  My dad was also the reason I got set-up with a nutritionist and when all others doubt me, he encourages me to keep going.  Additionally, I would like to thank Johnny Limp at Torc1Racing, Drew Smith at WER suspension for help with set-up and advice, Tech Tube, PowerSeal USA, Unabiker, FMF, Jerod Stoner at JS Designs for Jersey Lettering, Lee Rogers at Bicycle Therapy, EKS Brand Goggles, P3, MotoFIT, All Balls Racing, Sixsixone, Mika Metals, N-Style, Vertex Pistons, Fly Racing and Dale Spangler, Michelle at CCH, DT-1 Filters, Motorex, Hinson Clutch Components, Acerbis,  Clockwork KTM, Matto Cycle for frequent encouragement, The Kulp Family, my competitors, and all of my friends that have provided encouragement along the way.

Michaux Enduro: 13th overall!

Bike: MotoFIT KTM 200 XC
Result: A-200 1st, 13th Overall

Report:
After a frustrating ride at the Beehive Enduro with a third place finish, I was determined to come back strong at the last rock race.  After class on Friday, I made the drive home and got to work mowing lawns.  After mowing, I got the rest of my gear ready for Michaux.  Saturday night, my dad and I drove to Michaux and spent the night.  I was unsure of whether or not to run a Vee Rubber Trials tire at Michaux as it had rained for a couple days, although it appeared dry where we camped.  Sunday morning, I made the swap to the Trials Tire as I thought it would be a good choice for the technical terrain (Also, it was the advice given by Pete Wright).  We used a National Enduro format for this enduro with 6 total sections ranging from 3.3 miles to 8.5 miles.  Most of the sections were around 8 miles which spread out the scores.
My goal for the first section of the day was to ride smooth and under my ability as I have been having a tough time in first sections at enduros.  I have been getting bad arm-pump, riding over my head, and crashing a lot.  I decided to take it easy the first few miles and then turn up my speed.  I was able to navigate the technical section with no falls and dropped a good score.  A lot of riders had trouble here with big crashes or broken equipment.  The second section of the day was probably my worst as we got lost and added an unnecessary ½ mile by making a wrong turn.  Because of this, my score wasn’t where it should have been but I finished the section strong.
The rest of the day, I was able to ride flawless and I rode a little out of my comfort zone in order to stick with the faster riders on my row.  One of the craziest sections featured a 35 mph speed which consisted of logging roads, ATV trails, and mountain side paths.  I was able to tie some of the AA riders in here (although I ran out of gears in a lot of areas).  The 5th section featured 3.3 miles of technical moon rock and jagged rocky single-track.  I did my best to pick good lines and not get stuck.  I was able to drop a 2 here which was what the other AA riders dropped.  The last section of the day was the most fun for me as I battled Pete Wright who later took home 6th overall and the High Point A award.  I was able to make 2 passes on him and kept with him over the 7.5 mile section.  If I can continue to follow him in upcoming races from the beginning, I should be able to do better.  The current AA pace is uncomfortable for me at times but it is allowing me to learn how to go their speed.
At the end of the day, my hard work paid off with my seventh win of the season and a 13th overall finish.  I am hoping to continue to ride strong at the last two enduros.  I have a month and a half off right now from racing so I will mountain bike weekly, eat healthy, and prepare for the last two rounds of the ECEA Enduro Series.  I would like to thank my dad for helping me out the past few races by driving me to the races, helping me get prepared and pitting for me.  Without his help, I wouldn’t be as focused on the racing part at the enduros.
I would also like to thank the support of my family and friends, as well as my sponsors which are Johnny Limp at Torc1Racing, Drew Smith at WER Suspension, Tech Tube, Mike at MotoFIT, PowerSeal USA, Unabiker, FMF, Jerod Stoner at JS Designs for the jersey lettering, EKS Brand Goggles, P3, All Balls Racing, Sixsixone, Mika Metals, N-Style, Vertex Pistons, Fly Racing, DT-1 Filters, Motorex, Hinson Clutch Components, Acerbis, and Clockwork KTM.

ECEA Enduro Series Round 12: Rattlesnake National Enduro

Race Report: ECEA Enduro Series Round 12: Rattlesnake National Enduro
Rider: Zack Huberty
Bike: MotoFIT KTM 200 XC
Result:            Nationally: A-200 2nd, 42nd Overall
                        ECEA: A-200 1st, 19th Overall

Report:
Following my win at the Foggy Mountain enduro, I was feeling a little more confident in myself.  I am slowly building my confidence as I finally can see that I have what it takes to win in the A200 class.  During my two weeks off, I was unable to ride because I had to catch up on work that needed to be done around the house.  I wasn’t that bothered by not riding as the long season makes a small break a good time to rest.   I pretty much kept the same bike setup going into the national enduro and made sure I had a trials tire ready in case it got extremely rocky.  I have been running a rock setting most of the year that has given me a lot of success.
After a lot of rain throughout the week and on Saturday, the track was pretty slick at the race.  I rode on row 45 with another A200 buddy, Tanner Thomas.  Tanner has won every national enduro he has entered this year so I was excited to ride with him.  At 9:45 we took off on the first test which was fairly uneventful other than trying to stay off the ground.  The grass track was extremely slick and the woods were very dark.  I got horrible arm pump in this section which I have been battling recently.
The next section went flawlessly as I flowed well and rode smooth.  The 3rd section was the worst of the day for me as I rode over my head and made way too many mistakes.  I kept missing turns, almost crashing, and wadded up on two muddy logs.  This was the first time that I have ever had the rear wheel kick me in the head (pretty scary).  The rest of the day was uneventful as I focused on riding smooth, not making mistakes, and riding smart.  My strongest section came in the 9 mile A B section.  Prior to the section, I made the call to put on a Vee Rubber Trials Tire.  This was the best decision I made during the day because it helped a lot and I was able to ride very well.  The only problem I had was that I got tired towards the end but was able to ride smooth to the end of the section.
I then decided to switch back to a knobby for the final section of the day.  I started to feel tired during the last section and it was also very loamy.  There were huge holes in the trail in this section which made it sickening as it was a rough ride.  I was so tired that I couldn’t even double the big holes.  I finished the section strong and was happy that I didn’t let the two AA riders behind me catch me all day.  At the end of the day, I was happy to finish 2nd in my class and 42nd overall at the National.  I was even happier to finish 1st in the A200 class in the ECEA which now ties me in points for the lead.  I am also seeing a dietician now so I look forward to improving in the upcoming races.  I really want to get my first championship.
I would like to thank the support of my family and friends, especially my dad for his race support, as well as my sponsors which are Johnny Limp at Torc1Racing, Drew Smith at WER Suspension, Tech Tube, Mike at MotoFIT, PowerSeal USA, Unabiker, FMF, Jerod Stoner at JS Designs for the jersey lettering, EKS Brand Goggles, P3, All Balls Racing, Sixsixone, Mika Metals, N-Style, Vertex Pistons, Fly Racing, DT-1 Filters, Motorex, Hinson Clutch Components, Acerbis, and Clockwork KTM.

Round 11: SORR Foggy Mountain Enduro

Erin Lyn Photography

Race Report: ECEA Enduro Series Round 11: SORR Foggy Mountain Enduro
Rider: Zack Huberty
Bike: MotoFIT KTM 200 XC
Result: A-200 1st, 17th Overall

Report:
After feeling like I couldn’t put a section together at STER, I was hoping that I could put in a solid ride at Foggy Mountain.  Going into the race, I knew that the heat would be a factor, and I also debated using a knobby or a trials tire.  Prior to Foggy Mountain, I picked up a Specialized Hardrock 29er from Lee Rogers at Bicycle Therapy in Philadelphia.  It has been a goal of mine to buy a mountain bike this summer and start training more by mountain biking.  Lee was extremely knowledgeable about mountain bikes and walked me through everything on the bike.  He also introduced me to Hammer Nutrition products which I am going to look into as I want to start focusing on fueling my body the correct way.
We left at 4am on Sunday morning and my Dad took care of all of pitting needs throughout the day.  Through the first two sections I suffered some small arm pump as I was holding on too tight to the bars.  Despite a crash within the first mile of the first section, I rode flawlessly the rest of the day.  I focused a lot more on trying to be more aggressive down straight-aways by riding the bike a little higher in the rpms.  The day was fairly uneventful as I just tried to focus on riding smooth and mistake free.  We made two small errors throughout the day when we checked into two sections later into our minute than I liked, but it didn’t hurt us that bad.  I rode along with Pete Wright most of the day who has consistently been a top 15 rider.  For the first time in a while, I stuck behind his wheel almost all day and even made a pass in the final section.
At the end of the day, I was able to beat 2nd place by 3 points and my closest competition by 6 points.  I am trying to keep my riding intensity and focus up throughout the races so that I can ride stronger.  This was also the first race I used my Tech Tube in a Bridgestone M404 and it worked awesome.  It is great to know that you don’t have to worry about a flat.  My MotoFIT KTM 200 worked excellent and the small jetting change I made seemed to work all around a lot better in the heat.  I have to say that my day was a lot less stressful since my dad was out there pitting for me, filling my camelback, and taking a look over my bike at times when I was resting.  In two weeks, I head to the Rattlesnake National Enduro where I will try to put in another solid ride.

ECEA Round 10: Barbed Wire Enduro

Race Report: ECEA Enduro Series Round 10: STER Barbed Wire Enduro
Rider: Zack Huberty
Bike: MotoFIT KTM 200 XC
Result: A-200 1st, 21st Overall

Report:
The past few months have gone by so fast with racing, work, and the endless bike maintenance.  I unfortunately haven’t had the time to write a race report recently but the two previous races went well with two second place finishes in technical terrain.  This past weekend, my Dad and I headed to Elmira, PA to race the Barbed Wire Enduro.  We arrived there on Saturday after a four and a half hour drive.  In the morning, we woke up to excellent riding weather and I felt good.  The only thing that was bothering me was a swollen ankle from a bee sting on that Friday.
The track conditions were fairly dry and loamy with a lot of roots.  I headed into the first section confident in myself and my bike.  I had a great start as I followed a fellow A rider (Pete Wright) who has been riding at AA speed all year.  I was right on him until a big root sent my bike and I right into a tree.  In the shadows of the dark, the root got me and wrapped me around the tree.  Luckily, my chest protector and handlebars took most of the hit but the chest protector left a nice gash on my stomach.  I was frustrated with my mistakes early on, and even had arm pump throughout the section from being so tense.
At the first gas stop, I straightened out the bars and made some suspension changes.  I was so frustrated with the way I was riding and was having trouble finding traction in the hard-pack terrain.  With some helpful advice from friends and my dad, I re-gathered my composure and started putting in some solid times.  I only ran into one other problem which was a flat tire before the gas, but I had everything I needed to successfully make the tube change.  Throughout the rest of the day, I only crashed hard once which sent the bike cart-wheeling (one of the nastiest crashes of the season).  For the remaining sections,  I paced myself and let the bike do the work as I rode calm.  In the last section of the day, I finally rode consistent, with-in my limits, and was satisfied with myself.
Even though I had a rough day, I still rode solid enough to get a class win and missed out once again on AA overall points by one position.  For the last 6 or so races, I have been inside the top 21 so I am happy with that.  This weekend I will head to SORR for the Foggy Mountain Enduro.  I am hoping to ride stronger and more consistent in every section of the day and finish inside the top 15.  I’d also like to mention that I am currently looking for support for 2013 so if anybody is interested, please contact me at ktmracing323@yahoo.com.
I would like to thank the support of my family and friends, especially my dad for his race support, as well as my sponsors which are Johnny Limp at Torc1Racing, Drew Smith at WER Suspension, Mike at MotoFIT, PowerSeal USA, Unabiker, FMF, Jerod Stoner at JS Designs for the jersey lettering, EKS Brand Goggles, P3, All Balls Racing, Sixsixone, Mika Metals, N-Style, Vertex Pistons, Fly Racing, DT-1 Filters, Motorex, Hinson Clutch Components, Acerbis, and Clockwork KTM.

ECEA RORR Enduro: 1st and top 15 Overall!

Race Report: ECEA Enduro Series Round 7: RORR Enduro
Rider: Zack Huberty
Bike: MotoFIT KTM 200 XC
Result: A-200 1st, 15th Overall

Report:
It’s been a long four weeks as we have had four enduros back to back since I finished my sophomore year at Penn State. The terrain has been totally different each weekend so tire selection and suspension settings have been a big key.  Prior to the RORR enduro, I got a Vee Rubber Trials Tire and a Tech Tube from Drew Smith.  On Thursday, I rode with Jamie (AA) and Pete Wright (Asr) to try it out.  This was my first time using a trials tire and I liked it a lot in the rocks.  My trouble in the rocks has always been the rock gardens where I usually get hung up.  With the trials tire, I just pick a line and go through it without any difficulties.
I arrived at the race on Sunday morning to the surprise of a track that had been rained on all night.  I got ready for a long day with high temperatures and humidity.  The first section of the day was about 6 miles of slimy, rocky, and tight trails.  I got some of my first arm-pump of the year here, stalled a few times, and had a tip-over so I wasn’t flawless.  I still dropped a respectable score.  In the next section, I had my best section of the day in a 10-mile piece where I was able to pass a competitor (also in A-200) who was two minutes ahead of me.  I rode flawless in this section and rode smooth.  For the rest of the day, I continued to ride smooth and not ride out of control.   My consistency was rewarded at the end of the day when I won my first A-200 race and finished 15th overall.  The trials tire gave me added confidence in areas where I usually struggle.
As always, there is always room for improvement and my hunger for success only grows.  I need to get better in my first sections in the rocks and I also need to push myself a little harder in order to set faster section times.  I plan to rest up this week and make some more bike set-up changes for the upcoming enduro.  I then plan to ride two times before the RRMC enduro in two weeks.  I’d like to take the time to say that I am excited about a new sponsor that came on board, Unabiker.  They make awesome radiator guards and are in the works on some different skid plates.  Check them out at Unabiker.com.

ECEA PBER Clock Run Enduro

Race Report: ECEA Enduro Series Round 6: PBER Clock Run Enduro
Rider: Zack Huberty
Bike: MotoFIT KTM 200 XC
Result: A-200 3rd, 16th Overall

Report:
As the season progresses, my expectations of myself are getting set higher as I want to be a consistent top 20 rider.  Unfortunately, I had a lot of bike work to do before the Clock Run enduro.  I had to change some seals and put a whole new clutch in along with regular maintenance.  I tried to change some of my suspension settings as well in order to get them working correctly for some high speed, bumpy fire cuts.  After reviewing the rider confirmation for the race, I got mentally prepared for a very fast paced day that would require my full concentration.
Once our line took off at the race, we quickly realized that the dust would be a factor throughout the day.  The first timed section of the day featured some very fast fire cuts and sand roads that were hard to keep pace at a 36mph speed average.  I did my best to stay on time but I didn’t feel safe at those high speeds in the whoops.  I decided to back it down a notch because my rear was bucking side to side (my error on the settings).  I just missed the flip for this section by 6 seconds which was disappointing.  We then went to gas and we started the longest section of the day.  This section was about 16 miles and was broken into two sections.  I rode pretty well through here and was mistake free, but I had a lot of trouble with lappers.  In the fire cuts, lappers would not pull out of the way which made it dangerous.  I ended up dropping a respectable score, but I think I could have done better with a little more fine tuning of my rear shock.
Unfortunately, those were the only points dropping sections of the day, but I was able to come out in 3rd place and 16th overall.  I am trying to ride consistently and in the top 20 every weekend.  I am still learning every ride and learning how to ride conservatively and smart.  This coming weekend we will head to the RORR enduro for some rock racing!
I would like to thank the support of my family and friends, especially my dad for his race support, as well as my sponsors which are Johnny Limp at Torc1Racing, Drew Smith at WER Suspension, Mike at MotoFIT, PowerSeal USA, FMF, Jerod Stoner at JS Designs for the jersey lettering, EKS Brand Goggles, P3, All Balls Racing, Sixsixone, Mika Metals, N-Style, Vertex Pistons, Fly Racing, DT-1 Filters, Motorex, Hinson Clutch Components, Acerbis, and Clockwork KTM.

ECEA Delaware Enduro

Race Report: ECEA Enduro Series Round 5: Delaware Enduro
Rider: Zack Huberty
Bike: MotoFIT KTM 200 XC
Result: A-200 2nd

Report:
Coming off a 15th overall finish the weekend before, I was feeling more confident for the Delaware Enduro which featured an all start-control format.  The terrain fit my style of riding better and featured a lot of single track, grass track, and loamy woods.  In previous years, I have never been able to put in a solid ride at Delaware, mostly due to my lack of fitness for the long sections.  This year I came in stronger and more conditioned as I have been training hard.  I was a little worried about the long 12 mile section during the day but it gave me no trouble.  Coming into the first gas of the day, I was still tied for first place which I have never been able to do at the races.  I was riding flawlessly, smooth, and calm.  A ¼ mile before the first gas, a large root snagged my brake lever and bent it back to my foot peg.  This was unfortunate as I could barely put my foot on the foot peg as it was in the way.  At the gas, I straightened out the pedal and fueled up.
For the rest of the day, I rode solid and followed a 250A rider on my row.  I made 3 mistakes the rest of the day which lost me time.  After the 4th test, I noticed that the wet spot in my skid plate wasn’t mud, but oil leaking out of my shift shaft.  This worried me throughout the rest of the day as it kept pooling up in my skid plate, but Dean Kulp had some oil that I added after each test.  I finished the day strong in the last section and passed the 250A rider on my row as I was tired of following him.  At the end of the day, I finished 2nd in my class and 30th overall.  I finished 2 points behind first which is the closest I have come all year to winning.  I am looking forward to the upcoming enduro this weekend at the Clock Run enduro where we will hammer sand whoops all day!
Also, thanks to the Kulp family for all of their help at the races.

Pine Hill Enduro

Race Report: ECEA Enduro Series Round 4: Pine Hill Enduro
Rider: Zack Huberty
Bike: MotoFIT KTM 200 XC
Result: A-200 3rd

Report:
It took a little longer than usual to get results for this enduro, but it was definitely an enduro to remember.  Since school just finished, I was looking forward to the Pine Hill Enduro.  Historically, it has always been known as a time-keeper.  I got there Sunday morning, and felt prepared for a good day.  Unfortunately, the day was uneventful and featured no points taking sections.  It did give me some good seat time though and allowed me to get used to sand whoops again.  Even though the enduro was kind of boring, I took the time to practice some techniques while out on the trail.  Any time on the bike is better than no time on the bike.
At the end of the day, I was able to drop a 0 for the day; however, a lot of others did the same.  The final placing all came down to seconds which I knew weren’t the best for the day since we ran into some computer problems.  The race was won by the best time keeper for the day.  After a week, the final results came out and I was surprised to see that I was 15th overall which is my best finish yet.  It is good to see that some of my hard work is paying off and that things are starting to click.  I am looking forward to the National enduro style enduro coming up next week which is the Delaware Enduro.

Tri-County Greenbrier Enduro

Race Report: ECEA Enduro Series Round 3: Tri-County Greenbrier Enduro
Rider: Zack Huberty
Bike: MotoFIT KTM 200 XC
Result: A-200 3rd

Report:
After a month off from riding due to remodeling our kitchen at home and being busy with school, I got back to racing the ECEA Enduro Series.  Coming into the Tri-County Enduro, I had figured out that my Mika Metals 48T sprocket is the best gearing for me in the sand and it lets me carry through the gears better.  I had to use the clutch too much with the 46T.  I also put on a FMF Turbinecore which seems to work pretty well even though it is spark arrested.  I packed up at 5am on Sunday and made the trip to Port Elizabeth.  The weather forecast looked awful with heavy rain on its way.  I started on row 25 with Jarod Kulp, Bobby Kershaw, and Tim Gift.  Before the rain started, I put in some solid times in the first few sections but I was still getting my feel for the sand.

Soon the rain started to come in as a drizzle and picked up even more.  Other riders seemed to be dropping like flies as the day progressed (a lot of crashes and bike problems).  Tri-County kept the race tough mentally and physically.  There were some tricky timed sections and there were also some really long sections (14+) which wear down your mind and body.  The rain only made it tougher and the sections kept going back to back without much trail riding in between.  My endurance training has been paying off as I usually struggle a lot in the longer sections but I kept it together better.  Unfortunately, I still made a lot of mistakes throughout each section which I need to work on.  Each little mistake costs me seconds.  If I can minimize mistakes, I can have a lower score at the end of the day.  I also want to strengthen my endurance since these rock races coming up are tough.

At the end of the day, it was only Tim Gift and I going into the last section of the day for our row.  I was able to put in a solid ride for the day for a 3rd place finish and 33rd overall.  I am slowly improving and I am hoping to meet my expectations during the summer when I have more time to train.  My goal is top 20 overall consistently so I have some work to do.  The next race is the Pine Hill Enduro in two weeks.

I would like to thank the support of my family and friends, especially my dad for his race support, as well as my sponsors which are Johnny Limp at Torc1Racing, Drew Smith at WER Suspension, Mike at MotoFIT, PowerSeal USA, FMF, Jerod Stoner at JSdesigns for the jersey lettering, EKS Brand Goggles, P3, All Balls Racing, Sixsixone, Mika Metals, N-Style, Vertex Pistons, Fly Racing, DT-1 Filters, Motorex, Hinson Clutch Components, Acerbis, and Clockwork KTM. Thanks to Rick Cornelius for the great photos!

75th Annual Sandy Lane Enduro

Thanks to Art Pepin for the photo!
Race Report: ECEA Enduro Series Round 1: 75th Annual Sandy Lane Enduro
Rider: Zack Huberty
Bike: MotoFIT KTM 200 XC
Result: A-200 6th
Point Standings: 6th

Report:
I have never worked as hard for a race season as I have this year.  The daily cardio workouts have brought me into the race season stronger than I was last year and I have a little more confidence as well.  With school being busy, it has been hard to keep up with training and racing.  It is becoming a regular routine to leave Friday after school and come back to school early on Monday.  These past few weekends have not been relaxing as I’ve been getting bikes ready, racing, cleaning bikes, doing homework, etc.

This past weekend was the 75th annual Sandy Lane Enduro near Chatsworth, New Jersey.
My dad and I woke up early on Sunday and drove down to the race.  My dad helped me get everything ready for my race and then I was off on minute 46E.  I felt ready and strong for this race and confident that I could ride well.  This weekend, I was the most experienced time-keeper on my row so everyone depended on me to keep us on pace and make smart decisions.  Two years ago, I burnt a check by 4 minutes here, so I have learned my fair share of mistakes since then.

After meeting the other riders on my row, we were soon off down a few fire cuts.  For the first 15 miles, we just kept on time while we rode fire cuts and roads.  Soon, we came out of the forest into some soft sugar sand where the speed average went up to 24mph.  I knew that we were going to be approaching a check.  As we went down a row of pine trees, the scoring crew was ahead and I slowly approached until the card flipped.  I sped into the check crew and then was off into some trail.  The trail was fast flowing with a lot of saplings and got tighter in some sections.  I felt great in here but made a few mistakes here and there.  Coming out of the section, I dropped 3 which was comparable to what others dropped in my class.

We caught back up on time and rode some faster flowing trail.  Before the first gas stop, we rode another piece of trail which was a little tighter and had a cool motocross/endurocross section in the middle of the woods.  Three corners into this little area, there was a deep berm which I may have drug my bars on the ground (I’m hoping my dad got video of that).  I felt good in this section and minimized my mistakes, but I think my gearing could have been a lot better.  I couldn’t carry 3rd and 4th gear the way I wanted to and had to use the clutch a lot.  I ended up coming out of the section with the 7th fastest time in my class, so I will need to work on the tighter trails this summer.

At the first gas stop, I fueled up on some cheese, crackers, and water.  My dad looked over my bike which was great because it gave me more time to relax.  I felt strong and was riding well so far.  The only thing I was worried about was my clutch which I was afraid it was fading at that point.  Between the 2nd and 3rd gas stop, we rode three sections.  The first section started out in a burned area of the forest which was fast-paced and had a lot of lines all over the place.  It was hard following the trail because the lines crisscrossed all over the place.  I felt good in here as the faster pace suited my style.  After this, we went onto the last section of the day which was a start control at the c-split.  I was expecting ten miles of trail but I believe it turned out to be a little more.  The section started off great with a lot of fast flowing trails that were a lot of fun.  Towards the middle, it started to get tighter and didn’t flow as well.  After a while, we rode into a pit area with some logs and hills.  While going down a hill, I tried to hit the rear brakes but they had faded for some reason and I hit a tree really hard.  I got back up but had to take it easy as I had no rear brakes.  I thought the section had ended, but the check crew said to keep racing.  It was a hard back-to-back section which tired me out a little more.  I rode fairly well but I could definitely improve without my rear brakes fading and better gearing.  I’ll be putting on a Mika Metals 48T for the next sand run.  I didn’t know this quite yet, but this would be the last points taker of the day.

At the second gas stop, I was ready for a fun, fast section.  My dad bled the rear brake since it had gotten soft and the fluid was black.  I had just changed the fluid recently but the abuse and using of it must have boiled it.  From the 2nd gas until the end, it was all time-keeping on fire cuts.  It was a nice ride, but I wanted to race down some fire cuts.  I will have to wait until next weekend because I know Curly Fern will have some fast fire cuts.  At the end of the day, I placed 6th but was not far off of the leaders and around 65th overall out of 500 riders.  I know I need to work on riding better in the tight, sandy trails.  I think a 48T will be more helpful than the 46T I am currently running and will help me in the tighter trails.

I would like to thank the support of my family and friends, especially my dad for his race support (especially this weekend for driving and pitting for me), as well as my sponsors which are Johnny Limp at Torc1Racing, Drew Smith at WER Suspension, Mike at MotoFIT, PowerSeal USA, FMF, Jerod Stoner at JSdesigns for the jersey lettering, EKS Brand Goggles, P3, All Balls Racing, Sixsixone, Mika Metals, N-Style, Vertex Pistons, Fly Racing, DT-1 Filters, Motorex, Hinson Clutch Components, Acerbis, and Clockwork KTM. I would like to thank Mike at MotoFIT for all of the KTM support and help with parts.  Lastly, thank you to Art Pepin for supplying me with this great photo!

Round 1: NEOC Cumberland County Fairgrounds

Race Report: NEOC Round 1: Cumberland County Fairgrounds Hare Scramble
Rider: Zack Huberty
Bike: MotoFIT KTM 200 XC
Result: A-Light 10th, 44th overall
Point Standings: 10th

Report:
After the last race, I was extremely disappointed with my performance.  However, when it comes to overcoming a set-back, I am always determined to improve and get better the next time.  This past week, I was able to work on my race bike and take it to New Jersey to ride with an AA rider, Tanner Thomas.  I was able to straighten out some of my suspension settings.  It is very helpful when I can go out and mess around with suspension clickers.  For me, it is all about learning from my mistakes, and I am able to do that.

This past weekend was the first round of the NEOC Hare Scramble Series and it kicked off at the Cumberland County Fairgrounds.  This race hasn’t been my favorite since the course gets very rough and I’ve raced it quite a few times.  But it was going to be a good test of my endurance and a test to see if my suspension adjustments helped.  Upon arrival at the race, I quickly realized that everyone had come out to the race.  The main event was huge with a 220+ racers.  I raced in the A-light class which combined two-strokes and four-strokes into one class, which is different from other series which usually do an A-200 class.

The main was set to go off at 2pm.  I got dressed in my sweet Fly Racing Kinetic Gear and my F2 Carbon Kevlar helmet.  I have to say that the Fly helmets are impressive and remind me of a high dollar Arai or Shoei street bike helmet with all of the vents and 3-inch thick helmet padding.  I was also fortunate enough to have Jerod Stoner at JSdesigns.com do some vinyl lettering for me on my jersey which turned out great!  If anyone is looking for some jersey lettering or custom t-shirts, he is the guy to go to.  Additionally, Drew Smith helped me make some suspension changes during the week which I was anxious to try out.

A little before 2pm, I headed up to the line on my MotoFIT KTM 200XC and warmed up the bike.  Before I knew it, the flag dropped and we were flat-tracking it around the first turn.  I had a fairly solid start but my inside line wasn’t as good of a choice as the outer line where riders were able to carry more speed.  In the first corner, I got plastered by dust and rocks, and had to back it off a little.  I lost a few positions but kept my composure.  By the time we got to the woods section, I had picked off a few riders and was settling into a comfortable pace.  To my surprise, we headed across the street where some nice new trail waited for us.  This trail was fast and fun.  I felt a lot more comfortable in the woods than out on the flatter grass track style course.  I was able to pass a couple more people in the woods, and follow a few other riders.  Early on, my plan was to settle into a pace and then slowly turn my speed up each lap.

After the first lap, I was 13th and was feeling a lot better than the weekend before.  The next lap, I made a pass up to 12th, and then made another pass for 11th on the next lap.  I kept pushing and putting in consistent laps.  By the halfway mark, I was finding my stride and was able to pace myself.  I wasn’t as tired as I expected.  In the last couple of laps, the track started getting extremely beat up with lots of square edges, whoops, and roots.  The ruts in the grass track were forcing me to pick wider lines or alternative choices.  Towards the end, lappers also became worse and I made a couple dangerous passes in order to pass people.  The more it got rough, the more I tried to piece together lines that were less rough and I also tried to ride on the outer edges of the whoops to avoid hitting the deep spots.

In the end, I was able to finish in 10th and 44th overall which is a big improvement from the previous weekend.  My class was stacked with a lot of riders, but I am looking to improve in the upcoming races.  I am unsure of whether I will attend the full ECEA or NEOC series, but I will make that decision coming up.  My primary focus will be the enduros and I will stay in shape by racing hare scrambles.  This coming weekend is the Sandy Lane Enduro and Round 1 of the ECEA Enduro Series.  I feel more prepared than I did at last year’s first enduro, so I am hoping to be top 3 in A-200.

Race Report: ECEA Tri-County Hare Scramble

Race Report: ECEA Round 1: Tri-County Hare Scramble
WER Rider: Zack Huberty
Bike: MotoFIT KTM 200 XC
Result: A-200 11th
Point Standings: 11th

Report:
After a couple months without a race, I was chomping at the bit to race again. With stronger support from sponsors and a stronger drive to do well, I was looking forward to the first round of the ECEA Hare Scramble series at the Tri-County site. Unfortunately, I woke up with a fever two nights before the race and was getting a sore throat, so I wasn’t feeling the best coming into the first race. Come Sunday morning, I was feeling alright, but not 100%. With my bike ready to go, we headed to Port Elizabeth. One of the things I wanted to find out early on is if my training in the off-season was helping. During the winter, I worked hard at riding the stationary bike and played a lot of basketball. My biggest struggle last year was my cardio fitness, so I am determined to be stronger this year. One of the downsides to college and a cold winter is that I was unable to ride very much. I rode once before the Tri-County Hare Scramble so I wasn’t exactly comfortable on the bike.

My dad, sister, and I arrived early at the Tri-County hare scramble. The course looked like it would be a little wet but fairly nice. I waited in line with my Fly Racing F2 Carbon helmet for a while before we got new trick transponders. After getting signed up, I watched the starts of the C-race to see how bikes reacted to the track. The torn up areas were very soft, so I had to be careful in those spots.

At 1:30, I rolled up to the A-200 line on my MotoFIT KTM in my fresh Fly Racing gear. I warmed up the bike and focused on a good start. Soon the flag dropped, and I got a horrible start as my foot slipped off of the kick starter. In the first couple turns, I got by 3 or 4 riders before we got into the woods. I got by a few more riders in the woods, but then my day started to go downhill. Soon, more and more 250 riders were flying by me and the trail was getting rough. I learned early on that my suspension was set-up all wrong. I had rode with the suspension in some sand before this race and it worked great, but the whoops here needed a much stiffer set-up. With my bike not working the way I wanted, I wasn’t comfortable to run a faster pace.

As the laps went by, I slipped further and further back. My confidence got lower as I knew that I wasn’t riding anywhere near where I felt I could. I wasn’t comfortable and I hadn’t ridden enough before the first race. I continued to ride and not give-up. During my last lap, I found some more motivation and comfort on the bike, and was able to put in a stronger ride for the last half of a lap.

At the finish, I was definitely disappointed. At the end of the day, my result was disappointing, but I need to look at the positives and negatives. A positive is that I had more energy and feel that I will be able to push on the bike once I get more comfortable. A negative was my suspension, but I will get that better set-up for next race. Thankfully, Drew Smith at WER has been extremely helpful with suspension set-up. I just need to make the proper adjustments and get more comfortable for next race. The next round is the NEOC on March 11th.

Once again, I could not have done all of this without the support of my family, especially my dad for his race support, as well as my sponsors which are Johnny Limp at Torc1Racing, Drew Smith at WER Suspension, Mike at MotoFIT, PowerSeal USA, FMF, EKS Brand Goggles, P3, All Balls Racing, Sixsixone, Mika Metals, N-Style, Vertex Pistons, Fly Racing, DT-1 Filters, Motorex, Hinson Clutch Components, Acerbis, and Clockwork KTM. I would like to thank Mike at MotoFIT for all of the KTM support and help with parts.

Works Enduro Rider

Last year, I teamed up with Drew Smith at Works Enduro Rider to get suspension help.  Drew Smith did all of my suspension throughout the year, and I helped run their website and facebook page.  One of the biggest changes we made to my suspension was adding a bladder kit to my rear shock and softening up the suspension as a whole for the rocks.  I made a lot of progress with different suspension settings and felt more comfortable on the bike.  This winter, I sent out another set of suspension for him to work his magic on so that now we have a set of fully done suspension for my race and practice bike! I am looking forward to another strong season with WER and I will also be using their Steering Dampner on my race bike. Stay tuned for more news, updates, and information on my most recent plans.

New Sponsor: Fly Racing

Last year, I never signed directly with a gear sponsor since Johnny Limp at Torc 1 Racing was able to get me AXO gear.  This year, I was going to go the same route but Dale Spangler from WPS and Fly Racing contacted me asking if I would like to become a part of the Fly program.  With Fly's large push in the off-road industry and their extensive support of riders, I felt it was an easy choice to make.  Over the years, I have learned that taking the opportunities to create strong relationships with my sponsors will benefit me in the long run.  I will be wearing the Fly race wear and their carbon helmet.  I am still figuring out which types I will race in but I like the Kinetic gear and the Andrew Short F2 Carbon Helmet.  I am looking forward to being a part of the FLY program and I hope to become one of the names on their long list of Amateur Support team riders next year.  Stay tuned for pictures of my gear and helmet!

New Sponsor: Hinson Clutch Components

I am excited to announce that Hinson Clutch Components has joined me for the upcoming year.  I will be using their clutch components in my bikes!  They make the best clutch parts on the market and have great akadized clutch covers.  Stay tuned for more exciting information as we get closer to the racing season!
